Processed meats in diet and Colon Cancer

The average lifetime risk of developing Colon Cancer is approx. 6% (1 in 17 people).

The IARC’s experts concluded that each 50-gram (1.8-ounce) portion of processed meat eaten daily increased the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%.

So if you eat 50g of processed meat every day, your risk of developing colon cancer increases from 6% to 7%.

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK and makes up 13% of cases of diagnosed cancers.

The UK incidence rate is 20th highest in Europe for males and 17th highest for females.

95% of bowel cancer cases occur in people aged 50 and over.

5 – 7% of cases of Colon cancer are caused by inherited conditions, Crohn’s disease or radiation.
